In a recent coaching session with a senior leader, we found ourselves deep in conversation about a quality that’s often underestimated—but absolutely essential in leadership: credibility.
As leadership author Rick Warren puts it:
“The most essential quality for leadership is not perfection but credibility. People must be able to trust you.”
That quote resonated deeply. Because credibility isn’t something you can claim for yourself—it’s something others grant you. And it’s earned not through titles or talk, but through consistent, everyday actions.
The Leadership Habit That Builds Trust
One of the most powerful ways to build credibility is surprisingly simple: Do What You Say You Will Do. (Or as I like to call it: DWYSWD.)
In theory, it’s straightforward. In practice, it’s where many leaders fall short—often unintentionally. The pace of work, shifting priorities, and competing demands can make it easy to overpromise or underdeliver.
But here’s the thing: every time we follow through on a commitment—no matter how small—we reinforce trust. And every time we don’t, we chip away at it.
DWYSWD is about integrity in motion. It’s about aligning your words with your actions, your promises with your delivery. It’s how people learn they can count on you—not just once, but consistently.

Why DWYSWD Matters
In leadership, credibility is your currency. Without it, your influence is limited. With it, people will follow you through uncertainty, change, and challenge.
And it’s not just about the big moments. It’s the small, repeated behaviours—responding when you said you would, delivering on a promise, owning a mistake—that shape your leadership brand.

A Question for Reflection
What behaviours are you demonstrating right now that reinforce your credibility as a leader or professional?
Are you following through on your commitments? Are you showing up in the way you said you would? Are you building a reputation for reliability?
Because leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being trustworthy.
